The Human Person in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

In the encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo XIV addresses one of the major challenges of the twenty-first century: how to preserve human dignity, freedom, and responsibility in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. The document acknowledges the extraordinary opportunities offered by new technologies in education, healthcare, research, communication, and international cooperation. At the same time, it warns against reducing human beings to data, algorithms, or predictable patterns of behavior.

The encyclical stresses that artificial intelligence must remain at the service of the human person and the common good. For example, automatic translation systems can facilitate dialogue between cultures and strengthen convivence among people speaking different languages. Yet the same technology can also be used to manipulate opinions, spread prejudice, or increase inequalities if it is not guided by ethical principles.

From the perspective of Convivence, Magnifica Humanitas calls for the development of a human-centered technological culture based on dialogue, mutual respect, education, and cooperation. Technology can bring people closer together, but only human beings can build lasting and meaningful convivence.
