Felipe VI and Democratic Convivence

Felipe VI’s 2025 Christmas speech differed noticeably from those of previous years. From the outset, the King focused his message on the need to protect Convivence, warning of its fragility in a context of growing social polarization. The address was delivered in the Salon of Columns of Madrid’s Royal Palace, a highly symbolic setting where the agreements enabling Spain to join the European project were signed.

Speaking directly to citizens, the King emphasized respectful language, openness to differing opinions, and individual responsibility as pillars of democratic life. He called for exemplary conduct from public institutions and rejected the imposition of ideas as dogmas.

Felipe VI also acknowledged the economic, social, and generational challenges of the present, while stressing the need to move forward together, without fear, through cooperation. The speech concluded on an optimistic note, highlighting Spain’s European commitment, talent, and collective capacity to build a shared future.
