More than a theological document, it constitutes a major ethical and political reflection on the future of humanity in an age increasingly shaped by algorithms, digital platforms, and technological concentration of power.

For those of us engaged in the Córdoba Forum, World Convivence Forum, and involved in the preparation of its next edition, this encyclical resonates profoundly with the reflections developed during our workshop of 18 May. The concepts of Convivencia, Convivance, and Convivence all express, in different linguistic traditions, the same aspiration: the possibility for human beings, cultures, religions, and societies to live together in dignity, dialogue, mutual respect, and shared responsibility.

Pope Leo XIV reminds us that technology is never neutral. Artificial intelligence can contribute to knowledge, communication, health, education, tourism, and peace. Yet it can also generate exclusion, manipulation, concentration of power, surveillance, and new forms of dependency. The encyclical warns against a world in which human beings become subordinated to algorithmic systems designed primarily according to economic or geopolitical interests.

This concern directly intersects with the philosophy of Convivence. Convivence does not mean naïve harmony or the disappearance of conflict. It means organizing convivence through dialogue, governance, solidarity, and recognition of human dignity. Córdoba, with its historical memory of convivencia between cultures and religions, offers a powerful symbolic framework for reflecting on these issues.

During our 18 May 2026 workshop, several participants emphasized that artificial intelligence will deeply transform not only economies and labour markets, but also human relations themselves. Tourism, education, media, mobility, and urban governance are already being reshaped by AI systems capable of influencing behaviour, opinions, consumption, and social interaction.

The question is therefore no longer whether AI will transform society, but which ethical principles and political objectives will guide that transformation.

In tourism, for example, artificial intelligence can improve translation, accessibility, mobility management, and intercultural communication. But it can also reinforce inequalities between territories, concentrate digital power among a few multinational corporations, and reduce human encounters to automated interactions.

The encyclical insists on the defense of the common good, social justice, and human freedom. These principles are essential for any future policy of convivence. The message of Pope Leo XIV is ultimately a call to remain human in the age of technological acceleration. The challenge is not to reject artificial intelligence, but to ensure that it serves dialogue rather than domination, solidarity rather than exclusion, and freedom rather than control.

The same tension exists in cities increasingly described as “smart cities.” Intelligence cannot be reduced to sensors, platforms, or predictive algorithms. A truly intelligent city is one capable of organizing convivence between residents, visitors, cultures, generations, and social groups. Governance, participation, transparency, and social cohesion remain central.

This is why the future II World Forum on Convivence, to be held in Córdoba, seeks to place these questions at the heart of international debate. Climate change, artificial intelligence, migration, demographic ageing, and geopolitical instability are transforming the geopolitical conditions throughout the world. Convivence must therefore become not only a cultural ideal, but also a political, educational, urban, and international strategy.

Historically shaped by encounters between civilisations, religions, and knowledge systems, the city possesses a symbolic legitimacy for promoting a global reflection on convivence in the twenty-first century.

In this context, Córdoba can play a unique role as a Mediterranean and international space for dialogue and encounter around Convivence.

The future of convivence will depend on our collective capacity to reconcile technological innovation with human dignity, cultural diversity, democratic governance, and peace.

Through Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo XIV opens an ethical and political reflection on artificial intelligence, human dignity and the future of our societies.
